What do Olympians and Freddie Mercury have in common?
Too easy?
CHAMPIONS! We are the Champions of the world and we'll keep on fighting to the end (Queen).
The definition of champion is
a person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition, especially in sports. "a champion hurdler." Similar: winner, titleholder, defending champion, gold medalist, prizewinner, cup winner, victor, conqueror, victor ludorum, titlist, champ, top dog, number one
a person who fights or argues for a cause or on behalf of someone else. "a champion of women's rights." Similar: advocate, proponent, promoter, proposer, supporter, standard-bearer, torchbearer, flagbearer, defender, protector, upholder, backer, exponent, patron, sponsor, prime mover, pleader for, campaigner for, propagandist for, lobbyist for, fighter for, battler for, crusader for, apologist for, apostle, evangelist, missionary, booster, plugger
Do you see yourself in one of those descriptions?
The very concept of being a champion isn't always attached to what you can achieve [gold medal, degree, certificate, awards, accolades], but what you can offer to others [support, encouragement, belief].
Don't get me wrong I believe in personal achievements and recognition when we meet our goals. Like:
Walking the stage at graduation
Crossing the finish line
Applause in the board room
Fireworks in the streets
Quiet accolades from the boss
In fact, the great Michael Jordan, (#23) of the Chicago Bulls, stated "Champions don't become champions when they win an event, but in the hours, weeks, months, and years they spend preparing for it."
It’s the same way leaders as champions are who cheer for the underdog, promote belief in the discouraged, support the struggling, and mentor the interested. Championing someone else takes years of training and preparation until it becomes a natural trait instead of forced behavior.
There are 7 Top Qualities to becoming a Champion Leader through conscious self-leadership that successful leaders with presence have, according to author Annette Stanton, a World Masters Champion and powerful coach. As always, I would encourage you to click on this link to read the descriptions of each leadership trait (http://annettestanton.com/the-top-7-qualities-of-a-champion-leader)

As fans of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and with it coming to a close, let's cheer for the CHAMPIONS...they earned it.
Let's also applaud the losers...they deserve it!
As leaders, let's uphold the underdog, the marginalized, the less confident...as they need it!
