STYLE. What is yours? Colors? Monochromatic? Modern? Classic? Elegant? Grunge? Plaid?

Did I get your attention with the photo? While looks can be deceiving, so can words. The style we are going to talk about is not external (like beauty), but internal (like leadership).

Don't leave me yet...just listen and ponder for a moment. What is your leadership style?

If you were to google leadership styles you would find many types of leadership behaviors that rise to the top. Examples such as autocratic, visionary, consultative, participative, pacesetting, and coaching (betterup.com). While these leadership styles are listed on the Betterup website as management leadership styles, they are actually two different styles - lead & manage.

A leader casts the vision and a manager sees to the day-to-day operations to make the vision a reality (Peterson, 2022).

According to Betterup, "A 2021 Gallup report revealed that managers account for 70% of variance in team engagement. Poor leadership has major negative implications for the organization. It can result in poor productivity, increased employee stress, and negative attitudes in the workplace. On the other hand, adopting the right leadership style will positively impact a company in many ways. It'll reduce turnover, empower employees to be more productive, and strengthen company morale. When leaders lead by example, it creates trust and a positive working environment. This enables employees to perform at their highest capacity."

During research on my dissertation, I focused on three leadership styles. In particular, transformational, transactional and laissez-faire (Peterson, 2020).

Transformational leaders inspired and motivated followers in ways that went beyond exchanges and rewards. Transformational leadership operated especially well in close supervisory relationships, compared with more distant relationships. Transformational leadership was thought to increase the follower’s intrinsic motivation through the expression of the value and importance of the leader’s goals.

In contrast, transactional leadership was based more on exchanges between the leader and follower, in which followers were rewarded for meeting specific goals or performance criteria. Rewards and positive reinforcement were provided or mediated by the leader. An effective transactional leader was able to recognize and reward followers’ accomplishments in a timely way. However, subordinates of transactional leaders were not necessarily expected to think innovatively and were monitored on the basis of predetermined criteria.

Meanwhile, lack of leadership or non-leadership style was referred to as laissez-faire and was highly contrasted to the active forms of leadership. Such leaders abdicated their overall responsibilities and kept themselves at a distance from the problems their followers were dealing with. This was also known as the passive avoidant leadership style. Not the most effective compared to the other two.

So the next time you look in the mirror consider your style. Not the external, though important for connecting with others, but the internal, more important for leading a team.
